Joe M. Quinn was born in Big Sandy, Montana January 31, 1927, the younger son of two children born to Emmet and Alice.
Joe attended school in Big Sandy and was actively involved in sports, Future Farmers of America, and Boy Scouts. He was a member of the distinguished school concert band under the direction of C. F. Boess which in 1939 performed for the Carroll College student body and State Legislature in Helena and for King George and Queen Mary of England during their royal visit to Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. Joe graduated from Big Sandy High School with honors in 1945 and entered the U.S. Navy where he attained the rate of petty officer third class, electronics technician. In the Navy he also briefly sang in the “Bluejacket Choir”. After service he enrolled in Montana State College and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics. On April 23rd of that same year he married Doris M. Freeland who was born September 16, 1926, and reared in Bozeman, Montana. Her parents were Minnie and Franklin Jackson Freeland who farmed in the Gallatin Valley after they were married in Bozeman in 1917. Joe and Doris moved to Havre, Montana, where he organized and taught a Veterans On-Farm Training Program at Northern Montana College before commencing his career with the Farm Credit System in 1953. Their three children were born in Havre, Montana: Connie in 1951, Sheryl in 1952, and Michael in 1956. They both participated actively in local organizations and public affairs. Joe was presented a Distinguished Service Award in 1958 by the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce for outstanding community service. Contributing to that award was his record as Master of Havre Lodge #55 AF & AM, President of North Central Montana Shrine Club, local Chapter Director and State Vice President Junior Chamber of Commerce, charter member and first president of Havre Jaycees Toastmasters Club, and activities in the Order of Eastern Star, Scottish Rite Bodies, and Algeria Shrine Temple. Joe transferred to district headquarters in Spokane, Washington, in 1959, and then to Washington D.C. in 1965 for three years as Associate Chief of Appraisals for the Farm Credit Administration. His primary responsibility was to establish appraisal standards and assist in formulating general appraisal and loan policy and programs for the use of the twelve Federal Land Banks in the United States and Puerto Rico. He returned to Spokane as Chief Reviewing Appraiser for the Twelfth Farm Credit District and in 1973 became an officer of the Federal Land Bank of Spokane. Joe received a Certificate of Merit in recognition of “distinguished service performed with honor and integrity for the Federal Land Bank System” and was presented the first gold watch awarded to a Spokane FLB employee when he retired as Senior Vice President in 1983. John K. McAnelly, age 79, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 11, 2010 in Madison. He was born the son of Eugene E. and Margaret (Kitchell) McAnelly at his grandparents farm in Lincoln, Indiana on June 22, 1931. John was united in marriage to Joyce Graber on December 27, 1953 in Des Moines Iowa.
John was a Senior Scientist at the Food Research Institute, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to accepting this appointment, he was the President for four years of McAnelly Associates, Inc., a food safety and quality management consulting firm. During his more than 33 years of food industry experience, he has been Group Director, Corporate QA for Nabisco Brands, Inc., Director, Corporate QA, Nabisco, Inc.; Vice President, Technical R&D Rival Pet Foods; and Chief Biochemist, Swift & Co. He is a graduate of Iowa State University and holds advanced degrees from North Carolina University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His PhD in Bacteriology was granted in 1960. John was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was a fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists, ASQC, the American Society for Microbiology, and the American Chemical Society. John was also Chairman of the IFT QA Division for 1993-94.
John and his wife Joyce have lived in Madison for the past 17 years. He was an avid Wisconsin Badger Fan, and had attended the Wisconsin Badger Football Homecoming Game, and Badger Hockey this past weekend. John was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.
John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joyce; his children, Anne (David) Henson, of NJ, Steve (Janet) McAnelly of NJ; grandchildren, Nicholas Henson and Lauren Henson of NJ; and a sister Joan (Herb) Morgan of IN.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at ASBURY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 6101 University Ave, Madison, WI, with visitation from 1:00 pm until the time of service at the church. John Michael Miller, a longtime resident of the Colville area, passed away in Spokane, WA on the evening of March 11, 2021 at age 88. John was born on April 28, 1932 in Spokane, WA to John and Alberta (Quinn) Miller. He grew up an only child in Spokane, idolizing his fireman dad and teacher mom.
John was a strong athlete making the varsity baseball and football teams his sophomore year at Lewis and Clark High School. He had a dedicated attachment to his alma mater and would sing the fight song every time he way LC. After graduating from LC, he attended EWSC before being called to active duty in 1951. While serving in the Navy, John managed to play 27 innings of baseball at Ronald Reagan’s ranch. After being honorably discharged in 1954, he returned to EWSC on the GI Bill and obtained his BA education and Masters from the U of I.
John always had a strong work ethic and the heart of a leader. He worked on the blister rust crew in Pierce, ID, when he was 15 years old pulling invasive blister rust weeds. The following two summers he became a straw boss managing crews of returning veterans who were older than him.
While attending college, John was set up on a blind date with a nursing student, Kay Tull. The two were wed in Moses Lake, WA on September 8, 1956, and enjoyed a quaint honeymoon on the coast. John and Kay welcomed 3 wonderful children, Mike, Daniel, and Lisa. They celebrated 64 years of marriage last September.
John began his education career as a teacher and coach in Latah, became a principal at 29 in Tekoa, and assistant superintendent in Colville at just 35 years old. After 26 years in education, John retired early and continued to help youth while working at rural resources as a youth job coordinator.
Skiing was a passion for many years for John. The entire family learned to ski at Red Mountain. When 49 Degrees North opened, John and Kay were on the Ski Patrol. John was one of the first patrollers to ride the lift to the top of the mountain carrying a toboggan. When John traveled to Europe and New Zealand, he packed his skis and told great stories of skiing there. He enjoyed traveling, usually finding obscure routes. In his later years, he and Kay enjoyed wintering in Hawaii, whale watching, finding avocadoes, and enjoying the warmth.
History was of great interest to John, and he had an uncanny ability to recall dates. Makes and models of cars were also his strengths. For many years, John spent hours in his vegetable garden. He always grew enough for the family and neighbors. He also took many trips in his camper seeing the sights in Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, and Arizona.
John was incredibly proud of his family, especially his children and grandchildren. They all have fond memories of playing games, listening to his stories, and spending time together with him. John was someone you could go to for sound personal, professional, or financial advice. Besides being connected with his family, he was very much a people person. If he didn’t recognize you, he would usually find a connection after visiting with you for a short time.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alberta Quinn. He is survived by his loving wife, Kay; his sons, Mike (Kathi) and Daniel (Wendy) Miller; his daughter, Lisa (Kelly) Carr; his grandchildren, Jonathan (Jill) Miller, Megan (Erik) Solberg; Amanda (Ryan) Vredenberg; Erin (Trevor) Buchmann, Dain and Michael Lake, Makayla (Cruz) Thompson, and Leanna (James) Lehr; and his great-grandchildren, Ruby and Theo Solberg, Huxton and Cordlen Miller, Tate Thompson, and Brennan, Nora, and Grahm Buckman, Seth and Danika Lake.
