Served under Earl of Essex in Netherlands adn Irreland; briefly imprisoned (1601) for complicity in Exxex's revolt; succeeded to barony (1602); on council of Virginia Company (1609); made governor and captain gerneral of Virginia (1610); halted colonists' abandonment of Jamestown, restored order (1610-11); returned to England: died on way back again. Aurthor of Relation on Virginia (1611). Delaware named for him.
He was instrumental in establishing "Hundreds," communities where settlers could have better protection against the hostile Indians.
