- according to letter from Virginia de Gervais, he was a minister in Germany but the history notes of Elso Stammler says he owned a big tobacco factory in Lehe -
birth and marriage records say he was a merchant
he had a bother who ran a German school in New York where two oldeer daughters were sent to live in about 1868 - she also said that there was a wife before Fitter (this seems not to be the case)
