- 12th Baron De La Warre - English soldier and colonialist. Served under Earl of Essex in Netherlands adn Irreland; briefly imprisoned (1601) for complicity in Exxex's revolt; succeeded to barony (1602); on council of Virginia Company (1609); made governor and captain gerneral of Virginia (1610); halted colonists' abandonment of Jamestown, restored order (1610-11); returned to England: died on way back again. Aurthor of Relation on Virginia (1611). Delaware named for him.
He was instrumental in establishing "Hundreds," communities where settlers could have better protection against the hostile Indians. His was Shirley Hundred," so named for his father-in-law Sir Thomas Shirley. The home was erected in 1613 overlooking the James River between Jamestown and Richmond.
