His wife, Alice, wrote the following on the back of this photo: "I'm sorry that Grandpa doesn't have his nice smile showing and the twinkle in his blue eyes, but it is he, at Ann's in Havre, having a birthday dinner, and of course they wanted me to be in it. Well, I guess I was saying my wish, hoping the camera wouldn't work, but it did."
